Winter gas meter safety

The gas meter needs to be clear of ice and snow

Don’t allow snow to cover your gas meter or its pressure regulator. Gently dust off the snow with a broom or your hand. Don’t use a shovel, which could damage the meter.

A blocked vent on the regulator next to your meter can result in high gas pressure that could damage appliances and cause a dangerous gas leak

If you have a high-efficiency furnace, power-vented water heater or other natural gas appliance that vents out the side of your home, remember to keep the vent pipe clear of ice and snow.

Don't let your vents get clogged. Dangerous carbon monoxide can build up in your house if your sidewall appliance vents are clogged
