Ice damming on your roof
Ice dams on the roof
Ice damming, happens when snow melt to fast on the roof, and refreezes at the bottom of the roof The melting snow that refreezes, and works its way back up the roof getting under shingles allowing water enter the home causing damage to the interior.
Some of the reasons that cause ice damming is the attic is to warm
1. Not enough insulation allowing heat from the home to enter the attic.
2. Not enough ventilation allowing the heat to build up in the attic
The temperature of the attic should be closer to the outside temperature. This will allow the snow to melt slowly preventing the refreezing at the bottom of the roof. Make sure you have proper intake and out take air. The Air ratio should be 50/50. The soffit vent should allow air to intake just as much as the roof vents allow the air to exhaust. The balance of the vents will move the outside air through the attic keeping the air temperature cooler then the interior temperature. The ridge vent system is the best, but any roof vent can do the job as long the air flow is balance.
